FLORIDA CIVIC LITERACY EXAM (FCLE)
The Florida Civic Literacy Exam (FCLE) is only valid for degree-seeking students first entering Florida Atlantic University BEGINNING in FALL 2024 Term and thereafter. Review the options outlined below to satisfy competency in civic literacy prior to graduation. Both options in A and B must be satisfied in order to graduate.
A. Successfully passing one of the following courses:
- POS 2041 American Government
- AMH 2010 Introductory Survey to 1877 (satisfies the course requirement if completed after the start of Fall 2024)
- AMH 2020 Introductory Survey Since 1877
Note: Credits earned for such courses via articulated acceleration mechanisms will count toward the civic literacy course requirement.
B. Achieving the standard score on one of the following assessments

*The FCLE is computerized and consists of 80 multiple-choice questions. Test-takers will have approximately two (2) hours to complete the test.
There is a two-week waiting period between attempts.

Important Information:
Please arrive no later than 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment.
OWL card or a non-expired Government issued photo ID is required and must be presented prior to testing. The TEST TAKER'S photo ID must match exactly the name you used when registering. (i.e.: double or hyphenated last names. If the ID that you are using on test day has 2 last names, then you MUST register using BOTH last names.)
The exam will assess competency in four (4) areas:
- American Democracy- Understanding of the basic principles and practices of American democracy and how they are applied in our republican form of government.
- U.S. Constitution- An understanding of the United States Constitution and its application.
- Founding Documents- Knowledge of the founding documents and how they have shaped the nature and functions of our institutions of self-government.
- Landmark Impact on Law & Society- An understanding of landmark Supreme Court cases, landmark legislation, and landmark executive actions and their impact on law and society.
