Chemistry Professor Presents Cancer Research at NCI’s 2024 DCB R15 Investigator Workshop

Mare Cudic, Ph. D., associate professor, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and director, Honors in Chemistry Program, FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, was invited to present at the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Division of Cancer Biology (DCB) R15 Investigator Workshop on June 26-28.

Held at the NCI Shady Grove campus in Rockville, MD, the goal of the workshop was to provide a focused, unique, and interactive platform for National Institutes of Health (NIH) Research Enhancement Award (R15) investigators who are supported by DCB to highlight their ongoing research, as well as exchange and explore new ideas.

Cudic’s presentation was one of the seven invited scientific presentations at the workshop. She presented research findings supported by the R15 grant titled, “Mechanistic insight into tumor-associated MUC1 glycopeptides binding to macrophage galactose-type lectin.”

“It was important to present findings from my first R15 grant, meet colleagues from other universities who have R15 grants, potentially establish new collaborations, and learn about other opportunities that NIH offers,” said Cudic.

NCI staff also presented talks that focused on professional development, including topics such as the NIH grant process, the peer review process, funding opportunities, and NCI research resources.

“By attending the workshop, I am better positioned to further explore the NCI’s funding mechanisms which support basic cancer research, as well as special initiatives and programs,” stated Cudic. “I had the opportunity to meet program officers from most of the research programs within the DCB. The DCB supports a variety of tools and services for cancer researchers and most resources are free of cost and available to anyone.”
