Researcher Featured on National Geographic's SharkFest

Stephen Kaijura, Ph.D., professor of biological sciences in Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, will be in three of the programs featured in National Geographic’s SharkFest 2020. National Geographic and Nat Geo Wild together are airing five weeks of shark programming with 17 original premieres. The content on Nat Geo WILD, which begins Aug. 9, features Kaijura in the episodes called "Sharkcano," "Shark vs. Surfer" and "When Sharks Attack."

• Aug. 6 at 7 p.m. EST, in "Shark vs. Surfer," the program will feature different areas of the world with the most shark-invested surf sports to hear harrowing shark-and-surfer stories told by the survivors, along with insight from Kaijura.
• Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. EST, the "Sharkcano" program will focus on magnetic stimuli as potential sources for navigation in sharks. Researchers examined how magnetic fields laid down in molten lava provide a roadmap that sharks could use to navigate. Kaijura’s portion of the program will feature how sharks respond to magnetic fields.
• "Sharks Attack" covers the topic of sudden shark attacks that frequently occur, although the motive behind such attacks is often left to puzzle scientists. This program will investigate these incidents to shed light on why and where shark encounters take place with the hope to better understand their behavior and limit the number of attacks. This six-episode season replays on Nat Geo Wild channel throughout the five weeks.
