About the Brain Institute
Inaugurated in 2016 under the leadership of Executive Director Randy D. Blakely, Ph.D., the Florida Atlantic Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute is a physical and programmatic embodiment of the Neuroscience Institute, designated as one of four academic research investment areas in the 2015 Florida Atlantic Strategic Plan with greatest potential to impact multiple dimensions of the university. The Brain Institute supports research, education and community outreach, with efforts spanning all of the Florida Atlantic campuses.
The Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute developed and oversees the interdisciplinary Neuroscience Graduate Program (NGP) that unites scientists, educators and students across multiple Colleges and Departments where neuroscience faculty pursue their research, as well as two internationally-recognized research institutes the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and the Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute, into a one of a kind training opportunity for those in the early stages of their neuroscientific careers.
Neuroscience has reached an extraordinarily exciting stage. Disciplines such as physics, biology, genetics, chemistry, psychology, anatomy, computer science, medicine and engineering, to name a few, are now powering discoveries at a rapid pace that reveal the basis of how we learn, think, remember, love and dream. These discoveries provide hope to millions with brain disorders that better diagnoses and treatments are within reach.
