Funding and Support
Graduate Teaching Assistantships
The Department of Sociology offers graduate teaching assistantships to outstanding students admitted as full-time students to the Sociology MA Program.
These assistantships provide students with a full tuition waiver (three classes per term) plus a stipend of $6000 per term in return for their work as assistants to the faculty. Students who are awarded graduate teaching assistantships have the opportunity to work closely with the faculty on their courses and make a significant contribution to the quality of the courses offered to both lower- and upper-division students.
A graduate teaching assistant (GTA) is deeply involved in the life of the department, as the position requires twenty hours per week of grading, tutoring, and other assistance to the faculty alongside full-time (three seminars) enrollment. The Sociology Department provides GTAs with a dedicated workspace in the department's office suite in the Culture and Society building on the Boca Raton campus as well as a range of professional development opportunities.
If the GTA's work in both the assistantship and the graduate program is satisfactory, the assistantship is continued for the four terms necessary to complete the degree.
The assistantship includes a full waiver of tuition plus a stipend. Students are responsible for paying all student fees beyond non-resident fees. Health insurance with a subsidized premium is available for domestic (optional) and international (required) GTAs.
When you submit your application, please indicate in your statement of purpose as well as the GradCAS application itself when asked whether you wish to be considered for an assistantship. No seperate application or sponsorship is required.
