Before attending the University of Miami for graduate study, Dr. Headley had received a B.A. in philosophy from The University of the South (Sewanee), the place that first inspired his passion for philosophy.

In addition to being an active member of many philosophical organizations, Dr. Headley is the co-founder, with Lewis Gordon and Paget Henry, of the Caribbean Philosophical Association. He has presented numerous papers at conferences such as the American Philosophical Association and the International Society for the Study of African Philosophy, and he has given invited lectures at the University of Memphis, the University of the West Indies, the University of Oslo, and Rhodes University in Grahamstown (South Africa). In November 2017, Dr. Headley had the honor of presenting the keynote address at the 63rd annual conference of the Florida Philosophical Association.
